Lan Xichen History Wiki

Lan Xichen grew up in the world of The Untamed, so the key differences:

- Lan Xichen's father died while he was still in his teenage years, leaving Xichen to inherit the title of Sect Leader before the events of The Untamed. While his uncle still played the role of acting leader and made many decisions for the clan as Xichen learned, the title was his.

- While he is only a few years older than Lan Wangji, Lan Xichen is still extremely close with his brother. They are considered the Twin Jades of Lan. From the closeness of relationship, it is clear that Lan Xichen played a heavy role in raising his brother beyond that of sibling.

- When the Qishan Wen Clan reach Cloud Recess with intention of burning it to the ground, Lan Xichen begs his uncle to let him stay as the sect leader should remain in Cloud Recess until the end. Instead, his uncle forces him to leave with sacred tomes; Xichen flees and finds refuge with a mysterious party which is later revealed to be Meng Yao.

- Despite being Sect Leader, Lan Xichen was not present as his brother's punishment after the first siege of the burial mounds.

- As the cultivation world resettles after the long fought Sunshot campaign and following the death of the Yiling Patriach, Lan Xichen focuses on continuing to rebuild his Sect's home, balancing the tumultuous bond between his sworn brothers, and playing a hand in raising the nephew that his brother has claimed as his own while Lan Wangji recovers and serves his seclusion.
personality
Lan Xichen has kind and gentle personality. He wears a smile on his face and is polite to everyone he meets, embodying the principles of his clan with grace and calm. In contrast to many in the cultivation society, Lan Xichen treats everyone with the same courtesy regardless of status.

Lan Xichen is slow to anger, but protective of those he considers his own. He is fiercely protective of his brother and those he considers close. This can lead him astray, as he will value their opinions above others.

While he is the Leader of Gusu Lan and strives to be a good example for his clan, Xichen does not see the world as black and white as his younger brother tended to do in his youth. He acknowledges the greys, that circumstances may lead to certain actions. He believes the best in people, which does cause him to be sympathetic if they are able to explain their motivations and to give more weight to those he considers trustworthy. alternatively, once he considers someone not trustworthy, redemption is a steep hill to climb.

He is the leader of his sect, raised to be understanding but to have sound judgement. He understands how to de-escalate situation, how to reach an agreement. He has been trained since a young age on negotiation, knows how to read those he is speaking to well enough to guide them toward the solution that he's deemed best. He does use the fact he is considered unbiased and reasonable amongst the cultivation world to his advantage and while this could lead him to him manipulating, he doesn't use this skill for harm. More often than not, he does believe the solution he's reached is the balanced and just one.

He can be petty, passive-aggressive to those he dislikes but this still presents itself as kindness to those who do not know him well enough. Even his arrogance, his clan's belief is that the cultivate on the righteous path after all, is often missed.

When he sets his mind to something, though he may not charge ahead, Lan Xichen is committed to it. Willing to give anyone, despite their standing a chance, Lan Xichen is also the sort of man to gather all the information he feels necessary before taking action.
key themes
TRUST: While not a man who blindly trusts all he meets, Lan Xichen does give plenty of opportunities for others to earn his trust. He supports those that do, like his sworn brothers, wholly. He also believes that he is a good enough judge of character, that he puts his trust in those that won't abuse it.

HARMONY: A balanced world is one that gives Lan Xichen peace, which is what he wants even at this young age. He is battle worn and now wants peace, a world protected from the evils that have plagued it. The suggestions and plans Jin Guangyao is laying out are a step toward achieving that and that eases the mountain of burdens that Lan Xichen has shouldered. If he is honest, and Lan Xichen is, there are times when he is so tired of the responsibilities he bears, even if he will carry them with back straight, shoulders squared, and smiling.

motivations
DOING THE RIGHT THING: Lan Xichen strives to embody the ideals of his clan, to do the right thing even if it is not the easy one. In that, he works hard to ensure that his clan thrives, that his sworn brothers work together for the harmony of the cultivation world, and that those he holds dear are safe.

This also stems from the fact that Lan Xichen does not want to be like his father, who went into seclusion and turned his back on his clan. Though he has never spoken it, a part of Lan Xichen hates his father for abandoning his clan, his family, and the world around him. He understands that Lans are cursed with a strong sense of love, but he hopes he will be able to overcome the curse both his father and brother have fallen to if such a love strikes him.

While no one would call Lan Xichen arrogant, the belief that his clan follows the righteous path is one that does make him, in a way, blind to alternatives when he believes he's found the righteous, harmonious course.
