As a result, he stuck by his belief in Jin Guangyao and reasoned away the things he did that raised suspicion as the man did much good for the cultivation world. Lan Xichen believes if he had listened to Nie Mingjue, ultimately, the man would be alive as would many others who lost their lives to Jin Guangyao's need to prove himself and solidify his place in the world.

personal history
Lan Xichen History Wiki

Lan Xichen grew up in the world of The Untamed, so the key differences:

» Lan Xichen's father died while he was still in his teenage years, leaving Xichen to inherit the title of Sect Leader before the events of The Untamed. While his uncle still played the role of acting leader and made many decisions for the sect as Xichen learned, the title was his.

» While he is only a few years older than Lan Wangji, Lan Xichen is still extremely close with his brother. They are considered the Twin Jades of Lan. From the closeness of relationship, it is clear that Lan Xichen played a heavy role in raising his brother beyond that of sibling.

» When the Qishan Wen Sect reached the Cloud Recesses with intention of burning it to the ground, Lan Xichen begged his uncle to let him stay as the sect leader should remain in the Cloud Recesses until the end. Instead, his uncle forced him to leave with sacred tomes; Xichen fled and found refuge with a mysterious party which is later revealed to be Meng Yao.

» Despite being Sect Leader, Lan Xichen was not present as his brother's punishment after the first siege of the burial mounds.

» As the cultivation world resettled after the long fought Sunshot campaign and following the death of the Yiling Patriach, Lan Xichen focused on continuing to rebuild his Sect's home, balancing the tumultuous bond between his sworn brothers, and played a hand in raising the nephew that his brother has claimed as his own while Lan Wangji recovered and served his seclusion.

» After Wei Wuxian's return, Lan Xichen supported his brother's quest to find answers about the spirit that had attached Mo Manor. Eventually, he recognized the spirit sword as his sworn brother's spiritual weapon.

» At Guanyin Temple, after stabbing his sworn brother, Lan Xichen is asked by Jin Guangyao to remain with him in the temple as it collapses. Lan Xichen gave in but was pushed away by Jin Guangyao, who spared him at the last moment.
personality
Lan Xichen has kind and gentle personality. He wears a smile on his face and is polite to everyone he meets, embodying the principles of his sect with grace and calm. In contrast to many in the cultivation society, Lan Xichen treats everyone with the same courtesy regardless of status.

Lan Xichen is slow to anger, but protective of those he considers his own. He is fiercely protective of his brother and those he considers close. This can lead him astray, as he will value their opinions above others.

While he is the Leader of Gusu Lan and strives to be a good example for his sect, Xichen does not see the world as black and white as his younger brother tended to do in his youth. He acknowledges the greys, that circumstances may lead to certain actions. He believes the best in people, which does cause him to be sympathetic if they are able to explain their motivations and to give more weight to those he considers trustworthy. alternatively, once he considers someone not trustworthy, redemption is a steep hill to climb.

He is the leader of his sect, raised to be understanding but to have sound judgement. He understands how to de-escalate situation, how to reach an agreement. He has been trained since a young age on negotiation, knows how to read those he is speaking to well enough to guide them toward the solution that he's deemed best. He does use the fact he is considered unbiased and reasonable amongst the cultivation world to his advantage and while this could lead him to him manipulating, he doesn't use this skill for harm. More often than not, he does believe the solution he's reached is the balanced and just one.

Lan Xichen believes the best in people, which does cause him to be sympathetic if they are able to explain their motivations and to give more weight to those he considers trustworthy. Willing to give anyone, despite their standing, a chance, Lan Xichen is also the sort of man to gather all the information he feels necessary before taking action. This opens up the opportunity for him being swayed or not acting quickly enough and does lead him astray, as he will value their opinions above others.

He can be petty, passive-aggressive to those he dislikes but this still presents itself as kindness to those who do not know him well enough. Even his arrogance, his sect's belief is that the cultivate on the righteous path after all, is often missed.

Lan Xichen is known to be the embodiment of Gusu Lan's principles, as Zewu-Jun. He is kind, warm, and fair. That's not all he is but it's rare that Xichen lets people close enough to see more than that. He is kind, yes, but some might notice that he helps others and reveals very little about himself in the process. It is a defense mechanism in part, but largely because he has lost parts of himself to the expectations of those around him. The events that happen at Guanyin Temple have also reminded him of the dangers of letting someone in, of trusting and believing you know someone wholly. He fears being deceived again.
